Open technologies, protocols and methods allows for ease of connectivity, improved accessibility and better system-wide integration. Their use avoids restrictions inherent with proprietry systems. Adopting a closed system restricts the number of suppliers, the range of solutions available and the number of skilled integrators and developers.

Open systems are often based on standard, low-cost devices using the Internet suite of protocols. The price of standard PC hardware has reduced whilst performance and reliability has increased. The Internet protocols have been widely adopted and already have years of development work at their foundation.
